What is Depth of Field ( DoF ) ??

So, the simple meaning of depth of field is here.

Depth of Field in photography means an image that contains a combination of a sharp object with a blurry background, and the bottom of the area which is sharp in focus. ( see the featured image )

that image which contains sharp area ( character: S, N, I,  C, K, E ), too easy right ??, yeah !!

here is a simple example of Depth of field with a beautiful explanation.

as you can see the focus point, that part is called as a “sharp area or object”.

Why DoF is so important ??

DoF is very important if you want to make some simple photographs into good-looking images.

If you’re not a pro photographer but want to capture images like a Pro, then you need to learn and understand DoF.

so you can easily capture some high-quality images without knowing so many things easily.

apart from this if you don’t know how to use manual focus then you can use the combination of Aperture priority mode + Autofocus.

that’s it, this mode automatically adjusts aperture which helps you to capture good images.

How to master Depth of Field ??

just understand this simple hack.

if the distance between your camera and object is small then use a large aperture is equal to a shallow depth of field.

and if the distance between your camera and object is large then use a small aperture ( large F-number ) which is equal to the larger depth of field.

now, here is the main thing, you need to learn aperture before you understand all this thing.

and if you want to master DoF then this topic is very important for you.

The basic setup…

depth of field

here are two objects with little distance and my DSLR camera.

this is the example that explains the real meaning of small DoF.

depth of field

Narrow DoF

as you can see the RED tomato looks so sharp and the second object the GREEN Capsicum is not so sharp.

I captured this image with my Canon 1300D18-55MM kit lens.

now, here is another example that contains a large distance & large DoF.

depth of field

Large DoF

as you can see the RED subject is now blur and the GREEN subject is now clear because I used a large focal length with a small Aperture.

and there is the final result.
