Tips & Tricks for Better Low key photography

here are some of the most unique tips which I found while I was trying to perform low key photography…

One Light Source

Make sure you have one light source, it can be artificial or natural.

Preferably choose nature over everything man created or in case you choose an artificial light source.

Remember the light setting is the most integral part of low-key shots.

and the light should fall on the broad side of the subject.

for instance, you see the eyes of the subject in light or one side of the face.

you need to figure out what you want to highlight in the image.

now let’s talk about the camera settings, which you may need to set to capture better low key photographs…

Camera Setting For Low key Photography

Mostly camera setting depends on the photographer and what he desires in the image.

but the ideal aperture of f/1.8 for lowkey photography ( very sharp 😀 ).

keep the aperture as lowest as you can for best results from f/1.4 to f/1.8 In this.

unlike sharp photography, you require a faster shutter speed.

You can use auto exposure mode and even apply for negative exposure compensation and for this switch the camera to metering mode to spot metering.

Spot metering only uses a small area to calculate the exposure.

which means that the camera would take the background accountable while calculating the exposure.

It will only focus on your subject.

The low-key photography is not limited to only black and white things.

The other colors with black can also bring the image to life.

To attain the perfect low key shot you need to consider illumination and elimination as very little will be visible in low key shots.

for better low key photograph, make sure you choose a dark background.

Make sure you focus on the lightning effect the most because that is what is going to make the image come closer to perfection.

now. you know everything about camera settings, let’s talk about some required gears which you might need to get better low key photos.

Gear You need

the very first and important gear which you need is a tripod.

because using a tripod, you can easily capture sharp images.

Use a perfect light source no matter it is artificial or natural.

as I mentioned earlier, Dark background is a must.

Light modifier, you can use an umbrella or softbox to get soft light.

and a Full frame camera, which you can use to get a pretty sharp and clear image.

Using a full-frame camera, it’ll help you to capture images with minimum noise.

Which is very important in low-key photography.

This will help you to set ISO as low as possible to capture less noisy images without compromising the image quality.

now let’s talk about some lighting conditions, which you need to set before you start doing low key photography.

lightening for better low key photos

Make sure you don’t let your light fall on the background and it only falls on the subject`s integral part, which you desire to capture.

All the lighting depends on the photographer and how he wants everything to be settled.

But if you are shooting in the studio you can try butterfly or Rembrandt lighting patterns as your low-key portraits and thank me later.

now let’s talk about some unique and diffrent light sources, which you can apply to get better at low key photography.

Different light sources

You can use candles or torches and maybe you should try some antique lighting objects.

And for these light sources preferably use a tripod

Candle lighting is one of the most pretty and famous lightings every pro photographers use.

also, It’s cheap and easy to capture, so make sure you try that.

Texture

If you’ve seen any low key photographs then you must be aware of this stuff.

Low key photography is known for its texture, depth, and contrast.

consider natural shots, artificial shots at studio, animal photography.

It can be used to emphasize textures in hair or skin for instance it can show the beauty of aged human face through wrinkles and other skin changes which should be beautified as they are natural not edited.

so make sure, you focus on texture on priority before planning your shoot.

Outdoor photography

many people are asking like, it’s possible to do this type of photography outdoor.

types of photography

as I mentioned earlier, in-door studios are a great option to perform this type of photography.

because, it’s easy to set up lights, a tripod, and other stuff ( you can shoot whenever you want, because of custom light sources ).

but here’s the quick answer for all users, who want to perform low key photography outdoor.

you can find some outdoor low-key images, and yeah it’s easy to find a good location and make your images look more aesthetic.

as you know low key photography, does not mean capturing images of only humans and showing off details, you can capture landscapes and so many things.

Landscape Photography

Although lowkey landscapes aren’t that popular they should be given a chance to prove a theory on how beautiful landscapes are.

and remember it is in your hand to do that ( if you’re really serious about low key photography ).

While capturing landscape photography do capture clouds.

they make the sky less bright, but they also create dynamic light patterns on the surface for instance on the water the cloud patterns, or land.

and believe it or not, that looks mesmerizing and will make your image a perfect shot

Make sure you bring your tripod with you.

Remember don’t use the widest aperture and make sure your shutter speed is not fast.

It depends on you what you prefer in landscape black & white or color.

Photography is all about creativity and you discover things when you try different things.

now, you got some good low-key shots, so it’s time to retouch your images…

Editing Tips for Low key images

Post photograph processing has been very essential nowadays.

Photo Editing Apps

even the most perfect images go through this stage and it is to give them a final touch-up.

In low-key photography, the subject is the only bright thing all others are dark in the image.

therefore to increase the brightness you can adjust the exposure, highlights, and whites in the lightroom.

Noise is one of the typical issues in photography and obviously it might have occurred in the low-key images too.

Lower your ISO (excessive noise reduction and reduce the image quality by blurring it.).

You can also edit the color by using the HSL panel in the lightroom.

for this, you have to keep in mind the cool and warm tones of the image because color change can be by making good use of the knowledge of your image tone.

If you`re shooting in the studio you would desire a dark background to be wrinkle-free and impeccable.

for this, you need to adjust the shadows and black sliders until you get a wrinkle-free background

this will affect the subject too so don’t use it in excess.

Do whatever you can do to make your low key shot perfect.

“In photography, there is a reality so subtle that it becomes more real than reality.” –Alfred Stieglitz.
