As you know during the Covid Situation, It was really hard to create content inside as a photographer or as an artist.
But, as you also know, you can apply many different ways to create something amazing indoors.
You can shoot Macro or some Instagram vs. reality Like Peter McKinnon Style, or you can do some product photography at home.
But, Is it possible without any studio setup? Or without any DSLR Camera, or even without a proper Macro Lens ??
Hell yeah, it’s possible, you can even shoot better Product photographs with your smartphone if you’re getting good clarity.
So, today in this article I’m going to share some of the best (kind of) tips & tricks to do amazing product photography at home.
You don’t need any strobes or a studio, all you need is your camera and some good light sources like a bulb or LED light, etc…
You don’t need to worry about the stuff which we’re going to use because you’ll find all the required stuff in your house.
Now without talking more about it, let me share some good tips to do product photography.
And some examples of it which I captured recently by applying all these tips.
How to Do Product Photography at Home
Things we need for the shoot
The very first thing you need is a good product, this is the very first thing you need.
As a beginner, you don’t have any product to shoot so you can use anything.
For example, you can use a watch, a knife, or any digital Item like a smartphone, or if you have a couple of different lenses then you can use that one to create a professional product shoot.
You can literally use anything to start product photography at home.
Apart from the product itself, you are going to need a camera.
Mostly Professional photographer shoots product photography with a good macro lens ( to get better details of the product ).
But just for the shoot as a newbie, we’re going to use a kit lens that you get with your camera.
I got 16-50mm with my Sony Alpha 6000 so I’m using that one.
If you don’t own a camera then you can even use your smartphone.
Now that all the requirement is finished, here are some additional (optional) materials which you can use to make your image stand out.
- You can use a white paperboard.
- Light Source – you can use natural lights or LED lights and make a DIY strobe yourself.
- Additional Props ( to draw attention to your product )
- Tripod to get better steady shots
You can use almost anything as props, like if you’re trying to shoot through some objects then you can use books, Glass, etc…
This makes your product stand out.
How to Create a DIY Strobe
This is one part of the photography hack which you can do if you’re struggling for a better light source.
You can use any lamp as a light source and just add some filters to get soft light.
As a filter, I personally use a cotton cloth to get soft light.
Now you know the basic pieces of stuff which are needed to do a frenetic product photoshoot.
Here are some images which I managed to capture using this technique.
Mac Product Shoot ( Right after the Apple Event 😀 )
All images are edited using Darktable.
As of now, I’m shooting RAW with my Mirrorless camera to get more details so all these images are very compressed jpg versions of the original file.
So After understanding the default workflow fully, if you’re still not able to get the result that you’re looking for.
Then just add more creativity and change the perspective/angle which you’re using to shoot.
In the end, It’s all about practice and your creativity which makes your image perfect.
So make sure you practice a lot to shoot something amazing.
That’s all from my side, hope you guys like this article and learned something new today.
